Why Breathing is an Important Part of Meditation
The terms ‘breathing’ and ‘meditation’ are rarely NOT used together. It is like they are companions and partners for life. Let’s explore the relation between breathing and meditation.
Bringing Life…Bringing Happiness
To put it simply, breathing is just another word for life. We live because we breathe. It is as simple as that.
But what kind of a life are we living? Are we living a stressed out unhappy life? Are we constantly running from pillar to post chasing jobs, partners, dreams and in general chasing happiness?
Mediation has the power to end this case. Mediation helps you calm down and find happiness in your life.
And if you are wondering how meditation achieves this, the answer lies in your breath.
Breathing and Meditation – the Relationship Revealed
Meditation helps you calm down by encouraging you to focus on your breath. Have you ever observed that your breath is so strongly connected to your emotions? Suppose you are shocked by something, there is a sudden sharp intake of breath. When you are angry, you probably find yourself breathing faster. Ditto when you are excited. So basically your breathing is a reflection of your emotional state.
In meditation, the idea is to work on your breathing to balance your emotional state and further improve your overall emotional health.
Focusing on Breath – the Basic Meditation Technique
“Focus on your breath”, a commonly used phrase in meditation simply means being aware of your breath. Observe how you inhale and pay attention to the exhalation.
In its simplest form, focusing in your breath means being aware of the expansion and contraction movement of your abdomen. In more complicated techniques, you may be asked to inhale and hold your breath, or to imagine (or visualize) the breath traversing through your body. You may also need to forcefully exhale the breath loaded with toxins, fears and insecurities, mopped up from your body.
Such complete and dedicated focus on your breath leaves with you no thoughts in your mind other than your breath. And during the meditation session (or at the end of it), you find that your mind was completely free of the stress/problem that has been your constant companion. Perhaps, this experience offers a unique perspective or solution to the problem.
Such is the power of breathing and meditation combined. No wonder they are used together!
