The three S’s in Yoga

Sleep, Strength, Surrender

When you hear the word YOGA, what comes to mind?
Is it stillness? Boredom? Or a way to be PRESENT, become more flexible, be healthier?

Following the definition of the Art of Living Foundation, “Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” which means “to unite or integrate”; yoga is a 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge. Yoga is all about harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through the means of various breathing techniques, yoga postures (asanas) and meditation.”

Yoga means UNION and it can improve your life in so many different ways. It serves as a stress reliever, helps you be more patient, confident, flexible, balanced. It also helps you build endurance, and concentration.

For the many years that I have been practicing and teaching yoga, I admit this practice has brought only but positive things to my life.

Among three of these things are Sleep, Strength and Surrender.

Ever since my college years, I had suffered from chronic Insomnia. I would go days without having a proper sleep. And with only 4-5 hours a day of sleep, I would work, study, hang out and perform my day to day activities. Little did I know that this would take a toll on me. I got sick often, and started to feel tired all the time.

It wasn’t until I started to practice yoga that I noticed a change in my life. I began to sleep longer hours, the quality of my sleep was much better and my energy levels increased exponentially.

I also started noticing a change in flexibility and muscle strength. Yoga will help build and tone lean muscles and burn fat just like any other fitness routine. It also helps you have a stronger mind.

Last but not least, with yoga I have learned to be MINDFUL, to be PRESENT. We are always so worried about what happened in the past, or what will happen in the future, that we forget about the time that really matters… THE NOW! Be here, live in the now, let your mind focus on this present moment. Use Yoga as a tool to help you get to that point.

When you SLEEP, you recharge.
When you are STRONG, you endure bigger challenges.
When you SURRENDER, you become one with your present and with YOUR life. – Anadel Alberti
